POPULAR QUESTIONS

Do I have to be 18 even if I have my parent/guardians permission?

Yes, the ‘Tattooing of Minors Act 1969’ prohibits anyone under the age of 18 getting a tattoo even with your parent/guardians consent. It’s worth the wait!

How long does a tattoo take to heal?

This depends on how you look after it, your age, and how healthy you skin is. But usually between 10-14 days and then the tattoo colour will settle over time and may fade very slightly, this depends on how much it is exposed to sunlight.

How long do I have to wait in between tattoos?

You need to wait for a tattoo to fully heal before you add to it, if your new tattoo is on a different part of the body to the last tattoo then it can usually be done but this isn’t always the case. It is recommended that occasionally you have a break to allow your body to rest between long periods of healing.

Can I get the tattoo wet after it’s done?

Yes, I would encourage you to clean it at least 3 times a day by washing or showering, and apply the recommended aftercare cream, however I do not recommend soaking, or submerging the tattoo for long periods of time such as bathing for 2 weeks. It is also strongly recommended you do not go swimming for at least 2 weeks after a tattoo, the chlorine can affect the healing of your tattoo. Keep the tattoo away from any other liquids or chemicals that are not soap and water and always dry your tattoo by dabbing after you wash it.

Can I use sunbeds after I have a tattoo done?

No, it’s strongly recommended you do not use a sunbed or go in strong sunlight for any period of time for at least a month or 2 after you have a tattoo, keeping it covered or staying out of the sun is the best way to do this in hot weather. You may also need to apply more cream if the skin becomes dry. The tattoo will also stay looking better for longer over the years if you take care of your skin in the sun, by covering or using sun cream.

Can I get tattooed if I am pregnant?

No, if you are pregnant you cannot be tattooed. It is dangerous for both you and your baby.

Can I get tattooed if I am breastfeeding or post partum?

You should not get tattooed if you are breast feeding, it is also recommended you wait 9-12 months after giving birth before you have a tattoo.

Can I work after I get a tattoo?

Depending on where on your body you get tattooed and what your job is depends on whether it’s a good idea to have a tattoo, if you are a builder and want a hand tattoo it may affect how the tattoo heals when you go back to work; however, if you are a waitress and have back tattoo it won’t be as difficult to care for the tattoo as there is little risk for it to be exposed to bacteria under clean clothes, but remember you still need to remember to conduct your aftercare properly, making sure there is somewhere to clean your hands and the tattoo at work and apply the cream.

The tattoo artist is also not responsible for your boss’s response to your Tattoo, it may be responsible to ask your manager at work if getting a tattoo would affect your job.

Am I too old to get a tattoo?

You are never too old! You may have thinner skin that is easily bruised but if you are fit and well you won’t have a problem, again this varies from one person to another.

What medical conditions are a concern when getting a tattoo?

You may need to make me aware of certain medical conditions before getting a tattoo, this is important to allow me to care for you or give you the right advice.

These conditions include:

A heart condition

Diabetes

Hemophilia (or blood thinning medication or blood clots)

HIV

Hepatitis

Severe Allergies

Epilepsy

Pregnancy/Nursing/post-partum

Acne Medications

(including Accutane, Minomycin or any other Tetracycline-related medication)

Organ transplant and anti-rejection drugs

Antibiotics

If you are already feeling unwell please let your tattoo artist know, not only do we not want to catch your cold but it also means your bodies immune system is already busy so this might mean your healing could take a bit longer and may leave you more open to infection. I would not recommend getting tattooed if you feel unwell.

Does it hurt?

This is down to opinion mostly; it depends on the person, the tattoo, and its placement and always helps if you have had a good night’s sleep and have a good breakfast/meal and many say it helps to bring a sugary drink and snacks along with you for breaks, especially during a long session. If at any point you feel light headed (though this is rare) it is important to tell me so I can give you a break. If you have any concerns I can talk to you about this.

Can I have a tattoo after drinking alcohol?

No, it would not only be highly irresponsible for an artist to tattoo someone who is under the influence of any substance (alcohol or drugs) but alcohol also thins the blood. Depending on how much you have to drink I would recommend waiting 24 hours after a drink before having a tattoo, It’s also not a good idea to get a tattoo if your hung-over.
